The Pembroke Unit has been open for 18 months and affords patients with cancers as well as haematological conditions the opportunity to have all their inpatient and day case treatment under one roof. The Unit comprises the Pembroke Ward, a 23 bedded ward which includes 6 side rooms for patients who are immunosuppressed and at risk of infection, and the Pembroke Suite, where day case treatments, including most chemotherapy, and investigations are performed. The co-location of the two wards has meant that patient care can be provided by a specialist team of doctors, nurses and other health professionals in a seamless manner, with communication as well as information giving and sharing. It has also helped closer liaison with the hospital palliative care services. Work is ongoing to ensure that all suitable patients from the hospital can benefit from the services available on Pembroke.
We are grateful to the League of Friends for providing £5,000 to purchase reclinable seats so that patients receiving chemotherapy can be more comfortable.
