The League of Friends have provided funds for comfort packs to support End of Life care. The funds from the League will cover the purchase of resources and materials that are necessary to continue offering relative comfort packs for the loved ones of patients who are in their last days of life. These packs have been funded by the League of Friends for the past three years and have been very well received by families and staff alike. They add an extra dimension to care and support provided, as well as having a very practical use. Recent comments from our bereavement survey support this. “The professionalism of all the staff that were involved in my mums care – but as well as this the kindness and compassion. Having a bungalow arranged for us, being offered a comfort pack, car park and meal vouchers were all totally appreciated. We could not fault the care. We really experienced an excellent service in what was a very difficult time.”
The funds will also be used to purchase materials to enable our recent compassion rose project to continue. The project was developed following requests from ward staff for flowers that they could use to show compassion and respect when a person has died. We have a team of volunteers who craft each individual flower and the material costs are around a 2p per rose. Currently this project is funded privately by EOLC staff. Again the flowers have made a huge impact on staff morale and sensitive care following a death.
Finally, the League of Friends funds will be used to create a supply of celebration boxes, allowing patients and their families to celebrate/ mark an important occasion. Occasionally Patients will wish to marry, renew wedding vows, or celebrate an anniversary or birthday during the last days of their life. These boxes will allow a small celebration to be organised at very short notice. So far these boxes have again been privately funded by EOLC staff.
