ArtCare Open Exhibition

'River Test from the Boot Inn at Houghton’, black and white photo by Hugh Lohan

Walking along the main corridors of Salisbury District Hospital, you can’t fail to notice the artwork displayed throughout the year. ArtCare, the charitably-funded art service for the hospital, arranges around 10 exhibitions annually. These are organised especially for the enjoyment of patients, staff and visitors and show work by local art groups, professional artists and community projects.

A highlight each year is the Open Exhibition which is sponsored by the Salisbury Hospital League of Friends. It provides an opportunity for anyone to submit up to 5 pieces of work for selection. This year, ArtCare received work from 50 regional artists and over 90 artworks were selected for the final exhibition along the corridors and main waiting areas.

The panel of judges awarded the overall winner prize to photographer Hugh Lohan for his black and white photograph ‘River Test from the Boot Inn at Houghton’. The two runners-up prizes went to Clare Barnett for her abstract landscape ‘Bowerswain frost’, and to artist Anna Shuttlewood for her illustration ‘Stargazing 2’.

The Open Exhibition winner, photographer Hugh Lohan, has collaborated on several projects with New Forest artist Pete Gilbert, and they regularly exhibit together. Coincidentally, they also have both won ArtCare’s Open Exhibition in past years.

Recently, both artists displayed a greater selection of their work. Pete’s paintings are inspired by his New Forest home and the Test River valley. They express the seasons and many different moods that the river delivers. Soft mists and sharp reflections, reedy water meadows and lazy willows are all represented in his colourful landscapes.

Hugh Lohan also shows work from the New Forest area and river estuaries, as well as a retrospective selection of black and white photographs documenting some of his travels across the world, ranging from Tuscan landscapes to Iranian camel trains. His works are all Giclée prints on archival paper using pigment inks.

The hospital is grateful for the support from our local artists who submitted their work, as patients, visitors and staff enjoy the benefits of this display that brings colour, inspiration and distraction. A commission from sales goes into further hospital arts projects. ArtCare also wish to thank the League for continuing to sponsor the prizes that allows us to attract some excellent quality artwork each year.

Exhibitions at Salisbury Hospital are free of charge and can be seen on main corridors throughout the North building. For more information visit
